Elderly Women : An increasing demographic in India

There is going to be an increase in the number of people over the age 65 in the next few decades, especially women. In India, the ratio would be even larger due to huge population density. There might be a positive shift and more focus towards welfare policies and programs catering to the needs of elders. This can further lead to better healthcare system and facilities enhancing the lives of older women.

However, certain challenges are also there, like the widespread financial insecurity that the elderly women might face. In countries like India, women have much less life earnings and savings due to gender wage gap and few years of work. This financial insecurity multiplied by the rising cost of healthcare can exacerbate the problem for elderly women. Weakening of traditional family structures and urbanization will further leave many elderly women without proper care and support.

As families are becoming more nuclear, and younger generations move out of town for work, elderly women are expected to face isolation and loneliness especially in the rural parts. This isolation can have detrimental effects on mental health and well being. Also, the social stigma associated with ageing and lack of respect can further lead many of the elder women into deep depression.

Therefore, the increasing number of elderly women in India will lead to both opportunities and challenges. Ensuring policies and social attitudes to support this changing demographic will be essential. This will include financial security, healthcare, social support systems and a culture of respect and reverence for the elderly. Addressing these issues, will holistically lead to an improved life amongst the elderly women.
